HARDCORE 2013 (part.I)

ANTIDOTE – No peace in our time (Bridge 9)

Visiblement, les vieux roublards de NY n’ont pas lu le douzième commandement du hardcore: « Thou shalt not come back ». Et finalement, c’était pas une si mauvaise idée. Le disque est cool et sorti par un vrai label. La « hate machine » n’est pas si probante que sur leur mythique EP de 1983 mais le résultat est tout de même moins catastrophique que leur essai alternatif de la fin des années 80 ou leur retour hard. L’anti-attitude est toujours là.

ANTIDOTE – Live for nothing

Obviously, the old rogues from NY did not read the twelfth hardcore commandment: « Thou shalt not come back. » And finally, it was not such a bad idea. This record is cool and released on some real label. The « hate machine » is not as convincing as their mythical 1983’s EP but the result is still better than their strange alternative test of the the late 80s or their previous hard rock come back. The anti-attitude is still there. They’re not like the others.

BACKFIRE! – My broken world (GSR)

Putain, ils sont toujours là. Maastricht 1995. Pop pop pop. La coupe à la brosse n’est plus, érosion du temps oblige, mais le hardcore est toujours euro, coincé entre la Belgique, la Hollande et l’Allemagne, et cette orientation artistique qui s’étend de Minor Threat (pour les titres) à Crowbar (pour la reprise). La vérité est un mensonge, et tous les titres commencent pareil.

BACKFIRE – The truth is a lie

Damn, they’re still here, still dedicated ? Maastricht 1995. Pop pop pop. Crews cuts are no more shining, time does its job, but the hardcore is still Euro, sandwiched between Belgium, Holland and Germany, and the artistic direction extends from Minor Threat (for titles) to Crowbar (for the cover). The truth is a lie, and all songs begin the same.

BLACKLISTED – So, you’re a magician (Six Feet Under)

Blacklisted se faisait discret depuis 2007. Il faut dire qu’ils ne pouvaient pas faire mieux que « Peace on earth, war on stage ». Ils ne l’ont pas fait non plus d’ailleurs. Rien de fou ici, 3 nouveaux titres de alt-core avec pour thème la magie avec un k, « Mentalist » est le moins calme et le mieux. Le reste, c’est du vieux, volé par les japonais, et une radio session enregistré à la BBC. Je ne sais pas où George en est avec Cat Power, mais je lui souhaite tout le bonheur.

BLACKLISTED – Mentalist

Blacklisted were discreet since 2007. It must be said that they couldn’t do better than « Peace on earth, war on stage. » They haven’t done it either. Nothing crazy here, three new tracks of alt-core based on magik, not magic, « Mentalist » is the less calm song and the best. The rest is old, stolen by the Japanese to make a full-length, and there’s a radio session recorded for the BBC. I dunno if George made it with Cat Power, but I wish him all the happiness I can.

COLDBURN – Harsh fangs of life (Cobra)

Bon, on l’aurait su depuis longtemps si les allemands savaient faire du hardcore. Pourtant, il arrive que des groupes moins chiants que d’autres (True Blue, Icepick, The Ice, Goldust,…) sortent du lot. C’est le cas de Coldburn qui ne brille pas vraiment sur ce disque par la durée mais a eu au moins l’audace de composer un refrain d’amour.

COLDBURN – Love left me

Well, we know for a long time that the Germans are not very good at hardcore (as Frenchies you’ll tell me). However, sometimes, less boring bands than others (True Blue, Icepick, The Ice, Goldust, …) stand out. This is the case of Coldburn who don’t really shine on their entire record, but at least, had the audacity to compose a love song.

DEATHBED – Reduced to nothing (Catalyst)

Pour montrer réellement à quelle école ils appartiennent, Deathbed ont ressuscité le chanteur de Birthright pour un morceau. « Vegan chaotic new school hardcore » comme on aurait dit. J’ai jamais été fan de Earth Crisis mais certaines accélérations et breaks rappellent que l’humain n’est pas grand chose, surtout lorsqu’une planète nommée « Melancholia » plane au dessus de sa tête.

DEATHBED – Note to self

To really show us to what school they belong, Deathbed have risen old Birthright’s singer for a song. « Vegan chaotic new school hardcore » as we’d say. I’ve never been a Earth Crisis’ fan but certain breakdowns and accelerations remind that man is not much, especially when a planet named « Melancholia » is hovering above his head.

EMPOWERMENT – Gegen.Kult (Cobra)

Les tatoués de Stuttgart ont osé, le chant en allemand sur du hardcore métallique à jogging. Là où Sidekick, leur précédent groupe, sonnait un peu réchauffé de Cro-Mags versus Madball, au moins ici, l’initiative est sans précédent. C’est pas pour ça que c’est super, mais certaines pistes rappellent des souvenirs, cette époque où je ne comprenais strictement rien à ce qui était marqué dans les catalogues Lost & Found… Konflikt !

EMPOWERMENT – Stuttgart asozial

The tattooed Stuttgart dudes dared, singing German over a streetsport hardcore metal music. Where Sidekick, their previous band, sounded a little tepid between Cro-Mags and Madball, at least here, their initiative is unprecedented. The full-lenght is not that great, but some tracks bring back memories, a time when I didn’t understand anything that was written in the Lost & Found mailorders… Konflikt !

HOAX – 3rd EP (Painkiller)

A ne pas confondre avec l’horrible groupe français du même nom. Je n’avais pas trop pris ce groupe au sérieux non plus, et encore moins après les avoir vu en live. Mais il est vrai que ce 3ème EP de hardcore sale, façon Think I Care ou Infest au ralenti, est plus convaincant sur disque. En live, on dirait du mauvais punk UK 82 joué par une parodie de GG Allin. Free the land !

HOAX – Discipline

Not to be confused with the terrible French group with the same name. I hadn’t taken this band too seriously neither, and even less after seeing them live. But it’s true that their third EP is full of dirty hardcore, think Think I Care, or a slower Infest, definitely more convincing on plate. Live, it looks like bad UK ’82 punk with some GG Allin rip-off. Free the land !

KILL LIFE – Snake kills whole family (Magic Bullet)

Whouah. Depuis que Dwid Hellion est dans le crust et le black metal (via son label Holy Terror), on ne l’arrête plus. Accompagné de membres de Crass, Eyehategod, Pulling Teeth et Fucked Up, il sort des EP qui tiennent sur une face. Ça fait beaucoup de monde pour 3 minutes de pure aversion. Un disque engagé pour la planète et contre les hommes.

KILL LIFE – Snake kills whole family

Wow. Since Dwid Hellion is into crust and black metal (via his record label Holy Terror), we can’t stop him. Accompanied by members of Crass, Eyehategod, Pulling Teeth and Fucked Up, he released EP’s that fit on one side. That’s a lot of people for 3 minutes of pure aversion. A record committed against human but for saving the planet.

LIVING LASER – Versus pigs (Trip Machine)

Ah tiens, un nouveau groupe de hardcore sans metal, et sans comédie issue des années 80. Les influences sont là: de Bad brains à Leeway (version pavillon), et des petites touches Dead Kennedys même, moins commun pour un groupe du canton de New York. C’est moderne (même si je rejette le terme) et ça reste cool, ce qui reste quand même l’objectif n°1 de ce type de musique.

LIVING LASER – Drenched in effort

Oh look, a new hardcore band free from metal and without that perpetual 80s nostalgia sticked to their guitars. The influences are still there: from Bad Brains to Leeway (played by nice guys), with Dead Kennedys touches, not very common for a band from the New York area. It’s both modern (even if I reject this term) and cool, which is still the No.1 objective of this type of music.
